NORTHERN COMMUNITIES SHARE COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT AWARD

Released on December 20, 2002

Three communities in northern Saskatchewan have been recognized for their

outstanding, collaborative approach to community development through shared

business, recreational, infrastructure and service ventures.

The communities of Air Ronge, La Ronge and Lac La Ronge First Nation are

joint recipients of the 2002 Community Leadership Excellence Award,

sponsored by Industry and Resources and presented by the Saskatoon &

District Chamber of Commerce. The award recognizes communities that have

demonstrated leadership, vision and action in terms of business

development, community renewal and economic growth.

"These award winners are exceptional examples of what communities can

accomplish by working together," Industry and Resources Minister Eldon

Lautermilch said. "Their mutual effort to meet the economic and social

needs of their communities has created jobs, generated wealth and provided

opportunities for people in the North while contributing to the province's

economy as a whole."

Since the early 1980s, the three communities have shared the cost and usage

of many facilities and services like skating rinks, water and sewage

systems and health services.

Additionally, they collaborate on economic activities that benefit the

whole region. Examples include a commercial white fish packing plant in

Air Ronge that is managed and used by all three communities and a wild rice

processing business with exports into the European marketplace that is

owned by the Lac La Ronge Band and situated in the town of La Ronge.

"Northerners outside these three communities can also share in the pride of

this accompolisment," Northern Affairs Minister Buckley Belanger

said. "This is a good indication for the Saskatchewan public of the type

of innovative solutions and contributions northern regions make."

"The underlying premise of this award is to recognize communities that

pursue unusual market-oriented opportunities and have the fortitude to push

up the value chain," Saskatoon & District Chamber of Commerce Executive

Director Kent Smith-Windsor said. "This year's recipients are doing just

that."
