PROVINCE AND MÉTIS NATION PARTNER FOR PROSPERITY

Released on December 19, 2002

A renewed partnership agreement between the province and the Métis Nation

of Saskatchewan (MNS) means expanded economic development and job

opportunities for Métis people in the province.

The government and the MNS today renewed the management and operating

agreement for the Clarence Campeau Development Fund (CCDF). CCDF is a

Métis development fund that receives $2 million a year from the province's

gaming profits; the funds are used for Métis economic development and

employment initiatives.

"The CCDF has had a great track record of supporting and strengthening

Métis economic development," Industry and Resources Minister Eldon

Lautermilch said. "The agreement's renewal means that CCDF can continue to

provide opportunities, generate wealth and create jobs for Métis people

while contributing to the overall quality of life that we all enjoy here in

Saskatchewan."

Since its inception in 1997, CCDF has approved almost 300 Métis economic

development proposals for support, advanced over $5 million and helped

leverage more than $15 million in investment into the Saskatchewan

economy. This funding has helped create nearly 600 full-time, seasonal and

part-time jobs in the province.

The development and upgrade of the Batoche site, a popular tourism

attraction, and the training of Métis economic development officers through

the Dumont Technical Institute are just two examples of successful projects

funded by CCDF.

"The Métis Nation - Saskatchewan is encouraged by the renewed agreement,"

Métis Nation of Saskatchewan President Clem Chartier said. "Based on the

success of the first agreement, which saw the development of many Métis

small businesses, the new agreement promises that and more for the Métis

people's involvement in the Saskatchewan economy."

The renewed agreement emphasizes accountability measures while providing

greater flexibility for investment opportunities. It also provides

resources to hire an economic development officer for the Metis Nation of

Saskatchewan for two years to support the MNS's long-term economic

development goals.
