Legislation to remove restrictions on ownership of Saskatchewan's farm landbecomes law on January 1st, 2003.
The new law removes all restictions on ownership for Canadian individuals
and companies. The rules for non-Canadian owners remain at 10 acres for
both individuals and non-Canadian-owned entities.
"Saskatchewan needs increased investment to ensure the long-term
sustainability or our rural communities," Justice Minister Chris Axworthy
said. "Stakeholders have said removing ownership restrictions would
encourage development in both the livestock industry and or value-added
sectors. That kind of development provides new opportunities for
Saskatchewan residents."
Deputy Premier and Agriculture, Food and Rural Revitalization Minister Clay
Serby said the legislation sends the message to all Canadians that
Saskatchewan is open to outside investment.
The changes to the farm ownership rules were undertaken in response to
consultations with stakeholders conducted by the Standing Committee on
Agriculture, and in response to recommendations by the Action Committee on
the Rural Economy.
