DEADLINE APPROACHING FOR LIVESTOCK DROUGHT ASSISTANCE

The application deadline for Livestock Drought Assistance programs is

December 31st, 2002.



"The Herd Retention and Livestock Drought Loan Programs provide targeted

assistance to Saskatchewan livestock producers challenged by this year's

drought," Deputy Premier and Agriculture, Food and Rural Revitalization

Minister Clay Serby said.



Producers who want to participate in the programs have until December 31st,

2002 to submit their applications.



The herd retention program involves a payment on breeding herd livestock

(cow, horse, sheep and game animals) in defined drought areas of $25, $17

or $12 per breeding stock animal unit, depending on the degree of drought.



The livestock drought loan program offers a $50 loan per breeding stock

animal unit in defined drought areas.

calling toll-free 1-877-874-5365 or by visiting the Saskatchewan

Agriculture, Food and Rural Revitalization Web site at www.agr.gov.sk.ca.



Livestock producers in the province's drought regions can pick up

application forms for the Herd Retention Program from Saskatchewan

Agriculture, Food and Rural Revitalization's rural service centres or can

download a copy of the form from the department's Web site. Producers

wishing to participate in the Livestock Drought Loan program should contact

participating lending institutions.
