RESIDENT RECEIVES UKRAINIAN MERIT AWARD

Released on December 13, 2002

His Excellency Dr. Yuri Scherbak, Ambassador of Ukraine, today bestowed

upon Dr. Dmytro Cipywnyk a State Award of Ukraine, the Order for Merit, 3rd

Class, during a ceremony at the Legislative Building in Regina.

"This award recognizes the significant business and cultural contributions

made by Dr. Cipywnyk toward Canadian/Ukrainian co-operation," Scherbak

said. "It is with sincere pleasure and honour that I invest Dr. Cipywnyk

with this order today."

During a luncheon following the award presentation, Intergovernmental

Affairs Minister Chris Axworthy said, "Dr. Cipywnyk has worked tirelessly

to advance commercial and technological co-operation, cultural relations,

and community-led initiatives that promote links and activities between

Saskatchewan and Ukraine. That one person can achieve so much through

their work as a volunteer is remarkable and an example to us all."

Cipywnyk is immediate past president of the Canadian Ethnocultural Council

and the Ukrainian Canadian Congress. In 1993, he was elected president of

the Ukrainian World Congress. Cipywnyk was also active in the Ukrainian

Canadian Professional and Business Federation; Advisory Council, University

of Saskatchewan/Ukraine Relations; and the Advisory Committee on

Saskatchewan Ukrainian Relations.

Cipywnyk was made a member of the Order of Canada in 1992. He has received

the Canada 125 Commemorative Medal, the Queen's Golden Jubilee Medal, the

Shevchenko Medal by the Ukrainian Canadian Congress, and an Honorary

Doctorate of Canon Law from St. Andrews College, University of Manitoba.
