The Saskatchewan Police College is graduating today the largest number ofrecruits this province has seen in almost two decades. Forty-three new
police officers will join police services in Moose Jaw, Prince Albert,
Regina and Saskatoon.
"This government is committed to keeping communities safe," Justice
Minister Chris Axworthy said. "We now have 43 new officers for
Saskatchewan who stand as proof of that commitment."
Since 1999, the provincial government has increased funding for police
services by a record $18 million. This increase has made it possible to
recruit and train these most recent graduates of the Police College.
"We have come a long way, even in the face of difficult financial times.
We are very proud of what we have been able to do to strengthen our police
presence in the province," Axworthy said.
Graduating recruits have been in training since August of this year.
Following graduation, they return to their local police agency to continue
with three to six months of practical field training.
The graduating training classes included 20 officers from the Regina Police
Service, 13 officers from the Saskatoon Police Service, eight officers from
the Prince Albert Police Service, and two officers from the Moose Jaw
Police Service. Alberta was also represented, with two officers from the
Medicine Hat Police Service.
The Saskatchewan Police College is located at the University of Regina and
provides basic recruit training and on-going in-service training to members
of municipal police agencies throughout the province.
