PREMIER ANNOUNCES ROYAL VISIT IN 2003

Released on December 11, 2002

Premier Lorne Calvert announced today that The Earl and Countess of Wessex

will visit Saskatchewan in June 2003.

The visit of Prince Edward and his wife The Countess of Wessex, which will

occur from June 18th to 23rd, coincides with the centennial celebrations of

Regina, Moose Jaw and Lloydminster. The royal couple will also visit

Prince Albert to inaugurate the city's cultural centre and attend the

opening of the new Saskatchewan Indian Federated College facility at the

University of Regina.

"I am delighted that Their Royal Highnesses have accepted our invitation to

visit Saskatchewan," Calvert said. "I know the people of Regina, Moose

Jaw, Lloydminster and Prince Albert, and the staff and students at the

Saskatchewan Indian Federated College are equally pleased that The Earl and

Countess will share in the significant occasions in their communities."

"The youngest son of The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh is a devoted

patron of the arts and a strong supporter of The Duke of Edinburgh's Award,

having personally achieved Gold in the program in 1996," Lieutenant

Governor Lynda Haverstock said. "The Earl and The Countess have chosen to

use their positions to the benefit of many organizations, and the people

Saskatchewan are most fortunate to have this exciting opportunity to

welcome them to our province."

The 2003 tour of Prince Edward and The Countess of Wessex is a joint

undertaking among the provincial government, the host municipalities and

the Saskatchewan Indian Federated College. Prince Edward is the Royal

Patron of the Globe Theatre in Regina and is a trustee and president of the

international council of The Duke of Edinburgh's Award program; both

organizations will be involved in the visit.

Prince Edward first visited Saskatchewan in 1978 with his parents, The

Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh. His last visit was in 1994. This will be

the first visit of The Countess of Wessex to the province.
