PROVINCE CONFIRMS SUPPORT IN PRINCIPLE TO GAMES BID

Released on December 10, 2002

The Government of Saskatchewan has reconfirmed its support of Saskatoon's

bid for the 2007 World University Games (WUG).

"Saskatchewan is a world class province and Saskatoon is a world class

city. Given the opportunity we will be host to the best ever World

University Games," Calvert said. "We have come to the table with what we

can do to contribute to a successful bid. I am looking forward to seeing

what the federal government can do to contribute to a successful Saskatoon

bid."

The Province has committed to a provincial contribution to a maximum of $3

million per year over five years and to provide the required $5 million

U.S. license fee in instalments to the International University Sports

Federation (FISU) on behalf of the WUG Corporation, with the assurance from

WUG Corporation that this fee will be paid back to the Province.

The Premier said the weekend discussions resulted in significant

flexibility in the capital requirements. As well, the Bid Committee

confirmed that the Games are not anticipating any deficit but, should a

deficit be incurred, the WUG Corporation would assume all liability.

Should Saskatoon be awarded the Games, the three levels of government and

the WUG Corporation have six months to negotiate and sign a multi-party

agreement.
