NEW CONSTITUENCY BOUNDARIES LEGISLATION INTRODUCED

Released on December 9, 2002

Legislation to redraw Saskatchewan's 58 constituency boundaries was

introduced in the legislature today.

The Representation Act, 2002, is based on the report of the independent

Constituency Boundaries Commission, completed in November.

"This bill truly deserves the confidence of the Saskatchewan electorate

because it ensures that all votes cast in Saskatchewan are of equal value,"

Justice Minister Chris Axworthy said.

The Constituency Boundaries Commission was established in April in

accordance with Section 5 of The Constituency Boundaries Act, 1993, to

establish boundaries for 56 constituencies in the southern part of

Saskatchewan and two constituencies in the north.

The Constituency Boundaries Commission provided its report following an

extended period of hearings and consultations.
