TOURISM MINISTERS TO MEET IN VICTORIA

Released on December 6, 2002

Federal-provincial tourism funding agreements, air transportation and

travel security are key agenda items at a meeting of Canada's tourism

ministers in Victoria December 6th and 7th.

"Saskatchewan's tourism industry is vibrant, fast-growing and wide open in

terms of potential for growth and job creation," Industry and Resources

Minister Eldon Lautermilch said. "However, we must engage the federal

government in a more active role in order to fully realize that growth. We

hope this meeting will lay the groundwork for a more productive partnership

among the provincial, territorial and federal governments."

Allan Rock, Minister responsible for the Canadian Tourism Commission, will

attend the meeting. The meeting marks the first time since 1995 that a

federal cabinet minister has attended a tourism ministers meeting.

The federal, provincial and territorial ministers will also discuss the

impacts of airline restructuring, the Air Travelers' Security Charge and

cross-border concerns along with reviewing a common position paper prepared

by the provincial-territorial working group on air travel issues.

Tourism generates $1.3 billion annually in Saskatchewan and supports more

than 21,000 jobs in the province.
