Premier Lorne Calvert announced today Justice Minister Chris Axworthy willadd the Intergovernmental affairs portfolio to his responsibilities.
Axworthy was sworn in this morning as Intergovernmental Affairs Minister by
Lieutenant Governor Lynda Haverstock at Government House.
He takes over the responsibility for Intergovernmental Affairs from Ron
Osika, Minister of Government Relations and Minister Responsible for
Saskatchewan Liquor and Gaming. Axworthy will retain his position as
Minister of Justice and Minister of Aboriginal Affairs.
"Axworthy's new responsibility complements his role as Aboriginal Affairs
Minister, and better utilizes his experience dealing with the federal
government in other areas," Calvert said. "There are a number of pressing
federal-provincial issues including equalization, Kyoto, agriculture and
health care. I am confident Axworthy's involvement on these issues will
well serve the interests of Saskatchewan people."
Axworthy previously held the portfolio of Intergovernmental Affairs from
February 8th, 2001 to March 26th, 2002. He was first appointed Minister of
Justice and Attorney General on September 30th, 1999. He assumed
additional responsibilities as Minister of Aboriginal Affairs on October
12th, 2001.
Axworthy holds a Master of Laws degree from McGill University. He taught
law at the University of New Brunswick and Dalhousie Law School before
moving to Saskatoon to establish the Centre for the Study of Co-
operatives. He was director of the centre and Professor of Law at the
University of Saskatchewan until November 1998. He served as a Member of
Parliament for Saskatoon Rosetown Biggar from 1988 to 1999.
