Saskatchewan will push for improved crop insurance programs and thecontinuation of $600 million in federal funding for farmers at the
Federal/Provincial/Territorial meeting of Ministers of Agriculture today in
Ottawa.
"I meet regularly with a group of farm leaders who provide me with advice
on the Agricultural Policy Framework," Serby said. "They have provided me
with their initial views on potential changes to business risk management
proposals, and they want to see an improved crop insurance program for
Saskatchewan farmers. I am taking their input to the federal government
and my provincial and territorial colleagues."
While Saskatchewan farm leaders see some positive aspects in the proposal,
they continue to have many questions about the federal plan. Farm leaders
were encouraged that the proposal calls for a stronger crop insurance
program. As well, producers view provisions for federal funding to flow to
producers based on need, rather than on the Fredericton formula, as
positive for the industry.
"Farm leaders have a number of questions about the proposed 'New NISA' and
whether it will meet farmers' needs," Serby said. "I'm also telling Ottawa
that the federal government must make a commitment to continue the $600
million of federal funding being made available this year and next year, on
an ongoing basis. This money is over and above the current risk management
funding."
The Federal/Provincial/Territorial meeting is being held to discuss $1.1
billion in annual federal funding for risk management programming as
outlined in the recently-released consultation document entitled, A
Consultation Paper on Potential Changes to Business Risk Management
Programming under the Agricultural Policy Framework.
Over the last two years, Saskatchewan has been making the case for a
stronger crop insurance program, for a fair share of federal funding to
flow to Saskatchewan, and for the federal government to make the commitment
to stand behind our farmers. Serby said that he will continue to press
these points with his federal, provincial and territorial colleagues.
