The North West Catholic School Division in North Battleford and SaskPowerhave completed a $685,000 contract to improve energy efficiency at eight
school division facilities. The contract also provided education for
students on energy conservation, through the Destination Conservation
program.
"The Energy Performance Contracting service - including the Destination
Conservation program - is an important part of SaskPower's efforts to
tackle the issue of climate change, by helping customers reduce their use
of energy in a cost effective way," Saskatoon Greystone MLA and Legislative
Secretary for Energy Conservation to Premier Calvert, Peter Prebble
said. "The electricity and natural gas savings of this project will reduce
carbon dioxide emissions by just over 437,000 kilograms annually, which is
the equivalent of taking 63 cars off the road. I am pleased the staff and
students in the North West Catholic School Division are doing their part to
ensure a healthy environment for future generations."
"This energy management project, coupled with the Destination Conservation
program, has been a great learning experience for all of us," North West
School Division Board Chair Rosalie Payne said. "Not only do we now have
upgraded systems, but also enhanced comfort for teachers and students.
Also, because the retrofitting was done outside of school hours, there was
no interruption to our students and teachers."
Heating, cooling, lighting, ventilation, and building automation systems at
facilities throughout the school division were retrofitted under the
agreement. The Energy Performance Contract (EPC) agreement generated about
$160,000 in subcontracting work for North Battleford and Saskatoon
electrical and mechanical contractors. The upgrades began in 2001, with
construction completed earlier this month. All systems will be fully
operational by year-end.
The capital costs of the project will be financed through energy savings.
The money saved due to lower energy consumption will be used to repay
energy performance costs in just under 11 years.
Through Destination Conservation, school division students and staff were
able to learn about energy conservation and protecting the environment. A
team of students, teachers, principals, custodians and parents continue
working together on activities to help schools conserve resources and
protect the environment.
SaskPower also has ongoing EPC contracts with SPMC, the City of Regina and
the Saskatchewan Valley School Division. By partnering with Honeywell
Limited to deliver this program, SaskPower is able to provide expertise and
assistance to commercial and institutional customers, so they can optimize
their energy consumption.
