Highway safety improvements near the City of Melville will accommodate anew health facility opened this summer.
Turning lanes were constructed at the Highway 10 intersection leading to
the new Melville & District Health Centre on the outskirts of the City of
Melville to enhance safety for increasing traffic volumes.
"Traffic volumes increased when this facility was opened," Highways and
Transportation Minister Mark Wartman said. "The turning lanes were
necessary to ensure drivers traveling to and from the facility will be
safe."
This $170,000 improvement project was funded by the Transportation
Partnership Fund (TPF). The TPF earns its revenue from innovative trucking
programs. These programs involve partnership agreements with industry that
improve their truck haul efficiencies and safety performance.
This highway improvement is one of 26 projects across the province funded
by the TPF during the 2002/2003 construction year.
There are 46 companies that contribute to the Saskatchewan Transportation
Partnership Fund. These companies include: Federated Co-operatives
Limited, R & G Transport, Weyerhaeuser, and the Saskatchewan Wheat Pool.
An Advisory Committee consisting of the Department of Highways, the
Saskatchewan Chamber of Commerce, the Saskatchewan Trucking Association,
and the Consulting Engineers of Saskatchewan make recommendations to the
Minister of Highways on how the funds should be disbursed.
