Twinning on Highway 1 is continuing with subgrade construction on a 9.5 kmsection near Maple Creek.
"Work on this $1.8 million construction project began on September 24th and
should be nearly completed by the middle of December with some final
cleanup in the spring," Highways and Transportation Minister Pat Atkinson
said. "Completion of this job will require an estimated 33 full-time
workers."
There will be 9.5 km of subgrade construction for the new westbound lanes
of Highway 1 starting west of the junction of Highway 21. Surfacing this
new highway is planned for 2002.
Cee Gee Earth Moving Ltd. was awarded this subgrade construction project.
"This project is part of the Government of Saskatchewan's four-laning
initiative to accelerate twinning work on Highway 1 west," Atkinson said.
"In 2001-02, the Department of Highways and Transportation is on track to
open almost 70 km of twinned highway, including the section of Highway 1
from the Alberta border to 19km east."
In 1997, the Government of Saskatchewan made a commitment to complete
twinning on Highway 1 from Alberta to Tompkins by the year 2008. The
completion date has been moved up to 2004 as a result of increased funding
for the department.
Saskatchewan Highways and Transportation's budget this year is a record
$311.7 million, which will help to improve the major highway system that
carries 65 per cent of provincial traffic.
Motorists are asked to drive safely through the Orange Zone and watch for
construction signs and equipment.
