KEEPING ALCOHOL FROM MINORS

Released on September 17, 2001

A national public awareness campaign targeting minors and alcohol was

launched today across Canada.

The public awareness campaign aimed at stopping alcohol from getting into

the hands of minors is the first co-ordinated by the Canadian Association

of Liquor Jurisdictions (CALJ). All 13 provincial and territorial liquor

corporations and liquor boards are participating in the campaign, which

includes radio and print advertisements, posters in liquor stores targeted

at adults and posters in high schools and universities targeted at youths.

"The Saskatchewan Liquor and Gaming Authority is very pleased to

participate in this first-ever national campaign urging the socially

responsible use of alcohol," Minister Responsible for the Saskatchewan

Liquor and Gaming Authority (SLGA) Doreen Hamilton said. "Stopping the

purchase and use of alcohol by minors is a priority of SLGA and it

compliments other provincial initiatives such as the provincial designated

driver program, the server intervention program and Fetal Alcohol Syndrome

awareness program."

"The issue of minors attempting to purchase alcohol and adults purchasing

alcohol for minors is a serious one and a major concern for retailers of

beverage alcohol," SLGA President Sandra Morgan said. Morgan chairs the

CALJ national body this year. "We need to get the message across that it

is not acceptable for minors to have access to alcohol. By joining

together in a national campaign, we hope we can make an impact on the

public's awareness of this issue."

By joining the CALJ campaign, SLGA is part of a broad, coast-to-coast-to-

coast movement that will put the issue of access by minors to alcohol in

the public eye.
