PROPOSED FUNDING FOR MOOSE JAW CULTURAL CENTRE

Released on September 14, 2001

A proposal for provincial funding brings the construction of the Moose Jaw

cultural centre one step closer to reality. The province will commit $1.25

million from the Community Initiatives Fund (CIF) once the balance of the

funding for the $7 million project has been raised by the community.

"The proposed Moose Jaw cultural centre promises to be a huge boost to the

already vibrant City of Moose Jaw," Post-Secondary Education and Skills

Training Minister Glenn Hagel said, on behalf of Culture, Youth and

Recreation Minister Joanne Crofford. "I am confident the residents of

Moose Jaw will get behind this project to raise the balance of the funds

necessary to make this project happen."

The funding will be available from the Community Initiatives Fund,

previously known as the Associated Entities Fund (AEF), which was

established to distribute a portion of casino profits for the benefit of

Saskatchewan people.

"The people of Moose Jaw have done a fine job in raising both the money for

and the profile of the proposed cultural centre," Moose Jaw Mayor Al

Schwinghamer said. "I have no doubt funding for the entire project will be

in place soon, and that we can move onto the next steps of making the

cultural centre a reality."

"We are delighted with this announcement," Moose Jaw Cultural Centre

Builders chair Gary Hyland said. "Our members are encouraged in our quest

and optimistic that we will see a new cultural centre in Moose Jaw by 2003,

our centennial year." The Cultural Centre Builders is the volunteer group

taking on the project of raising the outstanding funds.

The Community Initiatives Fund receives a portion of the profits from

Casino Regina, the Gold Eagle Casino in North Battleford, the Northern

Lights Casino in Prince Albert and the Painted Hand Casino in Yorkton.

Grants are distributed to exhibition associations, Metis organizations and

local community groups that provide programs and services for vulnerable

children, youth and families.
