SASKATCHEWAN SCIENCE CENTRE REMAINS OPEN

Today the Board of Directors of the Saskatchewan Science Centre announced

that the Centre has secured the necessary funds to continue its operations.



Saskatchewan Science Centre Board of Directors Chair Randy Jahrig expressed

his pleasure at the announcement. "I am delighted with the news that the

Province will provide the necessary financial support to keep the Centre

open," he said. "Now more than ever before, we need the help from our

supporters and our corporate friends to help us raise the funds to continue

to refurbish and rebuild the centre and develop the strongest scientific

programming base possible."



The provincial government will provide additional one-time funding of up to

$600,000 this fiscal year. The provincial government, Science Centre Board

and other partners will work together to develop a strategic business plan

for the long-term viable operation of the facility.



"The Science Centre is an important education and tourist attraction for

Saskatchewan," Municipal Affairs and Housing Minister Ron Osika said. "We

are pleased to support the Centre's work in delivering quality science

educational programming and help them move toward a more self-sufficient

operation."



The Saskatchewan Science Centre is a non-profit membership-based

organization with an independent Board of Directors. The Science Centre

receives annual core funding from the provincial government, Sask Power and

the City of Regina totaling $540,000 and annual in-kind funding from the

City and Sask Power totaling $500,000 for rent and taxes.



The remainder of the the Saskatchewan Science Centre's funds come from

admissions to the Powerhouse of Discovery and the Kramer IMAX Theatre,

memberships, corporate sponsorships and special events.
