A newly twinned 21 km section of Highway 1 at the Alberta border wasofficially opened today.
The twinning improves safety on a stretch of highway that had limited
passing opportunities and increasing truck traffic.
Premier Lorne Calvert and Highways and Transportation Minister Mark Wartman
led a ribbon-cutting celebration today to officially open the new twinned
lanes.
"This is a major step in fulfilling our province's commitment to twin
Highway 1 west, as part of the national highway system," Premier Calvert
said. "There is a high cost associated with this twinning initiative, but
dollar values never match the value of lives."
The total construction cost for the new 21 km section of highway is $11.7
million, with grading costs at $4.1 million and paving $7.6 million. The
new lanes stretch from 20 km east of the Alberta border to one kilometre
past the Alberta border. The Alberta government will pay for their share
of the construction.
"We're on schedule to finish twinning on Highway 1 west by 2004 - four
years ahead of our original target," Wartman said. "Twinning was a large
part of our government's focus for highway improvements this year. We
recognize the economic importance of a strong transportation infrastructure.
"Rebuilding rural roads and repaving provincial highways were other key
areas we worked hard to improve."
The provincial government's commitment to twin Highway 1 across
Saskatchewan and Highway 16 from North Battleford to Lloydminster includes
108 km on Highway 1 west from Gull Lake to the Alberta border; 168 km on
Highway 1 east from Indian Head to the Manitoba border; and 103 km on
Highway 16 from North Battleford to Lloydminster.
Work on an additional 24 km of twinning on Highway 1 west began this fall.
The new lanes are expected to open in 2002, at a total cost of $6 million.
Saskatchewan Highways and Transportation's budget this year is $311.7
million, which is the highest transportation budget in Saskatchewan's
history. More than 70 km of four lane highways will be opened this year on
Highways 1 and 16.
