The provincial government today announced 17 new secondary communityschools.
"High school is where students make that exciting yet sometimes difficult
transition from childhood to adulthood," Education Minister Jim Melenchuk
said. "Saskatchewan Education is expanding the community schools program
to secondary schools because we recognize students need continued support
through to grade 12."
Community schools were started in urban elementary and northern schools.
In this year's provincial budget, funding was provided for a major
expansion including the addition of secondary and rural community schools.
Secondary community schools will provide increased opportunities for
students and their families such as youth leadership development, class
timetable options, cultural activities and support for teen parents to
complete their education.
"The Role of the School Task Force recognized and praised the value of
community schools and called for an expansion into secondary and rural
schools," Melenchuk said. "We are pleased with this significant expansion
into secondary community schools across the province. There is nothing
more important than supporting our students to reach their educational
potential."
"Saskatchewan has become a leader in community education in Canada because
of the strong support shown by our government for community schools. We
know that because of this initiative many more youth will graduate from
high school and become successful in life," Canadian Association for
Community Education President Faye Stupnikoff said.
Communities with new secondary community schools include: Saskatoon, North
Battleford, Regina, Prince Albert, Meadow Lake, Big River, Duck Lake and
Fort Qu'Appelle.
