Twinning on Highway 1 is continuing with further subgrade construction on a14.3 km section near Maple Creek.
"In keeping with our focus on fixing the roads, work on this $2 million
construction project is expected to begin in late October and should be
completed by early summer of 2002," Highways and Transportation Minister
Mark Wartman said. "Completion of this job will require an estimated 33
full-time workers."
This 14.3 km section of subgrade construction will create new lanes for
Highway 1 beginning east of the junction with Highway 21 and continuing
west for 14.3 km. This work adds on to the 9.5 km of subgrade construction
that began in late September west of the junction of Highways 1 and 21.
Between the two grading projects, a 23.8 km section will be graded by next
summer. Surfacing for this new section of twinned highway is planned for
completion in 2002.
This 14.3 km grading project is part of the Government of Saskatchewan's
commitment to accelerate twinning work on Highway 1 west.
"This spring, we announced that twinning on Highway 1 west would be
accelerated to improve safety and save lives," Wartman said. "We are
working hard to achieve our commitment of twinning Highway 1 west by 2004 -
four years ahead of schedule."
Kay's Construction Limited was awarded this subgrade construction project.
Saskatchewan Highways and Transportation's budget this year is a record
$311.7 million, which will help to improve the major highway system that
carries 65 per cent of provincial traffic.
Motorists are asked to drive safely through the Orange Zone and watch for
construction signs and equipment.
