MAJOR EXPANSION FOR ST. MARY HIGH SCHOOL

Released on November 30, 2001

Teachers, students, parents and community members in Prince Albert have

much to celebrate today. Planning is underway for renovations and a major

expansion of St. Mary High School.

"Prince Albert is a vibrant and growing community," Education Minister Jim

Melenchuk said. "We are very pleased to be able to support the expansion

to accommodate increased student population at St. Mary High School."

Saskatchewan Education will provide $100,000 for project planning this

year. Funding for construction will be committed in 2002 once the scope of

the project, cost estimates and preliminary plans are developed. Planning

and design work will begin immediately.

Saskatchewan Education and the Separate School Division will share the cost

of the school addition and renovation estimated to be $7.5 to $8 million.

Once the expansion is complete, the school will provide space for more than

800 grade nine to grade twelve students.

"This project demonstrates the government's commitment to work with school

divisions to provide students with comfortable and well-equipped learning

facilities," Melenchuk said.

"This announcement takes us one step closer to achieving our goal of

addressing our highest-priority school construction projects."

"On behalf of my fellow board members, we are truly thankful to Minister

Melenchuk for his leadership and his understanding of our situation,"

Prince Albert Separate School Board Chair Cindy Gee said. "We also thank

Saskatchewan Education for its recognition and support of a worthwhile and

timely project for us and the children of our school division."

With the $29.2 million in the Department of Education capital budget,

including $5 million from the Centenary Fund, approximately 125-135 school

construction, renovation or upgrading projects will be funded this year.
