The Minister Responsible for Disability Issues has proclaimed Dec. 3rdInternational Day of Disabled Persons in Saskatchewan.
"I ask all people in Saskatchewan to join with me on this day in
celebrating the contribution people with disabilities make to our society,
and reflecting on the challenges we must face to create a truly inclusive
society," Glenn Hagel said.
"People with disabilities represent a significant untapped resource for our
province," Hagel said. "The Government of Saskatchewan wholeheartedly
supports the vision of full citizenship for people with disabilities."
Hagel noted the 2001-02 provincial budget is evidence of the government's
commitment to disability issues. This year's budget includes several
initiatives that positively impact people with disabilities including, $2.4
million over the next three years to replace special need transportation
vehicles through the Centenary Fund, increases to the disability and care
giver tax credits, 108 new Early Childhood Intervention Program Spaces,
increased funding for community-based organizations and increased supports
to school divisions and students with special needs.
Hagel also noted that the government recently received the Disability
Action Plan from the Saskatchewan Council on Disability Issues. The Action
Plan is a framework for removing barriers faced by people with
disabilities, leading to their full inclusion in mainstream society.
By United Nations General Assembly proclamation, the International Day of
Disabled Persons is celebrated throughout the world on Dec. 3rd every year.
"This important day promotes understanding about disability issues and
increases awareness of the gains to be made from the inclusion of people
with disabilities into every aspect of social, economic and cultural life,"
Hagel said.
