Released on November 1, 2001
Highway 909, a 30 km access road south of Turnor Lake, was officially
opened today.
The new road stretches from Highway 155 to 30 km north. Upgrading of
Highway 909 to Turnor Lake commenced in 1997 and was completed in September
2001.
Premier Lorne Calvert and Northern Affairs Minister and local MLA Buckley
Belanger were present to celebrate the official opening of the new road.
"Today's event symbolizes our government's commitment to northern
Saskatchewan," Premier Calvert said. "It is essential we meet the
transportation needs of those who reside in more remote areas of the
province."
"I am particularly pleased this road has been built for the benefit of
northern people, and for the northern community of Turnor Lake," Belanger
said. "Increased access means increased economic and social opportunities
for our residents."
Belanger also recognized Senator Louis Morin, former Mayor of Turnor Lake,
for his contributions to the project.
The total construction cost for the new 30 km highway is $4.4 million.
Just over 75 per cent of the jobs created to complete the work went to
residents of Saskatchewan's North.
Saskatchewan Highways and Transportation's budget this year is $311.7
million, which is helping to resurface and upgrade 550 km of rural and
northern highways.
