IMPROVEMENTS TO HIGHWAY 6 NORTH OF REGINA

Released on May 28, 2001

Structural improvements will soon begin on 18.5 km of Highway 6 north of

Regina.

"Work for this $2.5 million improvement project is anticipated to begin

this week and should be completed by the end of June," Highways and

Transportation Minister Pat Atkinson said. "Completion of this job will

require an estimated 24 full-time workers."

ASL Paving Ltd. of Saskatoon was awarded this improvement project.

Highway 6 north of Regina will receive a structural overlay. Road work

will consist of milling off the existing rough surface and replacing it

with a new asphalt surface. The improvement will start 16 km north of

Regina and will continue to 500 metres south of the junction with Highway

99 in the Qu'Appelle Valley.

"Highway 6 is a major north/south provincial highway that has been

experiencing higher volumes of heavy truck traffic and general traffic in

the past few years," Atkinson said. "The stress is beginning to show on

this highway, so we are strengthening the base of this section to ensure

Highway 6 will support these heavier loads and higher traffic volumes."

Saskatchewan Highways and Transportation's budget this year is a record

$311.7 million, which will help to improve the major highway system that

carries 65 per cent of provincial traffic.
