Saskatchewan residents will benefit from new, state-of-the art radiationtherapy at the Allan Blair Cancer Centre in Regina.
A sod turning at the centre today marked the beginning of a project that
will see the addition of a new linear accelerator, computer treatment
planning system and CT simulator.
The additional system will give Regina four radiation treatment units, and
ensure the most appropriate and effective doses of radiation are delivered
to cancer patients.
"We want to ensure cancer patients have the best and most effective
treatment available," Health Minister John Nilson said. "This is part of
our government's broader commitment to provide accessible, quality health
services to the people of Saskatchewan."
Saskatchewan Health has provided the Saskatchewan Cancer Agency (SCA) with
$3 million for the purchase of the new equipment, and an additional $1.23
million to construct the addition for the linear accelerator.
"The addition and the new equipment will allow us to continue providing
cancer patients with quality treatment and timely access to care,"
Saskatchewan Cancer Agency Chief Executive Officer Bob Allen said. "The
agency provides more than 46,000 cancer treatments to an average of 4,500
new patients at the Regina and Saskatoon Cancer Centres every year."
While the timeliness of access to cancer treatment in Saskatchewan
continues to be among the best in Canada, the SCA is facing some challenges
with the rising cost of cancer drugs and the competition across North
America for skilled staff.
To help address these pressures, the province provided the SCA with $6.5
million in new funding in the 2001-02 health budget, bringing the agency's
overall budget to approximately $41 million, an increase of more than 19
per cent over last year's budget.
The increase in the agency's budget will also help to address the cost of
managing new equipment for patient care.
The addition at Regina's Allan Blair Cancer Centre is expected to be
complete by the fall of 2001, with the new linear accelerator installed and
operating by next spring.
