SURFACING HIGHWAY 13 EAST OF ASSINIBOIA

Released on May 9, 2001

Surfacing will begin on 16.1 km of Highway 13 east of Assiniboia this week.

"Work for this $3.1 million surfacing project is anticipated to begin in

early May and should be completed by late September," Highways and

Transportation Minister Pat Atkinson said. "Completion of this job will

require an estimated 69 full-time workers."

W. F. Botkin Construction Ltd. of Regina was awarded this surfacing project.

The surfacing project on Highway 13 will begin on the eastern outskirts of

Assiniboia and will continue 16.1 km east.

"Highway 13 near Assiniboia has seen an increase in truck traffic, which

leads to deterioration, so we are working hard to rebuild certain sections

of this highway," Atkinson said. "By strengthening and surfacing this

particular section, Highway 13 will be able to handle heavier traffic

loads."

Saskatchewan Highways and Transportation's budget this year is a record

$311.7 million, which will help to improve the major highway system that

carries 65 per cent of provincial traffic.
