FURTHER TWINNING ON HIGHWAY 1 WEST

Released on May 3, 2001

Surfacing has begun on a 9 km section of twinning on Highway 1 just east of

the Alberta border.

"Work for this $3.8 million surfacing project began this week and should be

completed by the end of July," Highways and Transportation Minister Pat

Atkinson said. "A total of 67 full-time jobs will be created with this

project."

Carmacks Enterprises Ltd. was awarded this project.

The surfacing project on Highway 1 west will take place on the new

westbound lane and will begin approximately 10 km east of the Alberta

border and continue east.

"Twinning our National Highway System will increase safety for the driving

public on these busy routes," Atkinson said. "This twinning project, along

with the planned 12.1 km of twinning on Highway 1 beginning just inside the

Alberta border and continuing east, will bring a total of 21 km of new four

lane highway at the Alberta border to be opened to traffic in the fall."

Saskatchewan Highways and Transportation's budget this year is a record

$311.7 million. Over 70 km of four lane highways will be opened on

Highways 1 and 16, valued at over $25 million.
