ROLE OF EDUCATION EXPANDING

Released on March 28, 2001

Saskatchewan schools need to go beyond traditional education according to

the Role of the School Task Force Final Report released today by Education

Minister Jim Melenchuk during a visit to Kitchener Community School.

"The report stimulates action and signals a transformation of our education

system. I feel that Saskatchewan's education community as a whole is very

well positioned to meet these challenges," Melenchuk said.

"Guided by the spirit of this report and in keeping with the vision of the

Role of the School Task Force, we are very excited that we will be able to

respond on budget day with a significant expansion of the Community Schools

program as indicated in the Throne Speech."

The report also affirms the philosophy of Community Schools; and discusses

the vision called SchoolPLUS that features much closer collaboration

between schools and other human service agencies like Health and Social

Services.

"We need to identify new ways of working together and finding additional

resources to meet both the public education needs as well as the many other

needs of children and youth," Role of the School Task Force Chair Dr.

Michael Tymchak said. "Each of us has a role to play in supporting the

education, development and well being of all Saskatchewan children and

youth."

The Task Force produced this report after dialogue in over 60 communities

across the province.

Saskatchewan Education will work with education stakeholders and partners

and government departments to determine the government's response to the

recommendations and to develop a shared implementation plan by the end of

this calendar year.

The study was commissioned by the Saskatchewan Government responding to the

education partners interested in examining the changing role of the school

in society today. Copies of the report are available at

http://www.sasked.gov.sk.ca/k/pecs/h/pp/whatsnew.html, or by calling 787-

6769.

"I want to thank the Role of the School Task Force members for their work

and dedication," Melenchuk said.
