$591,000 CENTENARY FUND INVESTMENT

Released on March 5, 2001

The provincial government is investing $591,000 from the Centenary Fund in

Saskatoon's YWCA/Kinsmen Crisis Shelter and the Saskatoon Community Service

Village Inc. The money will be used to renovate and refurbish the women's

shelter and to support the community service village.

"Strengthening the community and social service functions of the YWCA is

one of the best ways we can celebrate Saskatchewan's centennial," Premier

Lorne Calvert said. "Providing people in need with the best crisis and

emergency services care has always been important to the people of this

province."

A commitment of $341,000 from the Centenary Fund will enable the YWCA to

complete the renovations to the 40-room residence that serves as a critical

emergency shelter resource.

As well, $250,000 will be contributed toward the construction of a central

social service area operating out of the YWCA. This will create a single

space that will house six non-profit social services agencies including:

Saskatoon Family Crisis Intervention Services;

Family Service Saskatoon;

Saskatoon Sexual Assault and Information Centre;

United Way of Saskatoon;

Catholic Family Services of Saskatoon; and

YWCA of Saskatoon.

"I commend the Saskatoon Community Service Village for their fundraising

efforts. They have received support from the City of Saskatoon, the

private sector, foundations and individuals, to help make this project a

reality," Calvert said. "Through the Centenary Fund, we are making an

important contribution to community-based organizations and services that

will provide more effective resources for women and children in crisis."

The Centenary Fund, announced in the 2000-01 budget, will leave a legacy of

Saskatchewan's centennial for future generations. The Centenary Fund

supports specific infrastructure needs related to housing, education,

heritage properties, parks, highways, environmental clean-up and municipal

infrastructure.
