TWINNING ON HIGHWAY 1 EAST BEGINS

Surfacing worth $11.4 million has begun on 33 km of twinned lane on Highway

1 east of Indian Head to just east of Wolseley.



The work is divided into two separate contracts. The first contract is 18

km of surfacing near Wolseley and has been awarded to Mulder Construction

and Materials Ltd. This surfacing project on Highway 1 east will take

place on the new twinned lane that begins just east of Sintaluta and will

continue east of Wolseley.



"Work for this $6.1 million surfacing project is in progress and should be

completed by mid-October 2001," Highways and Transportation Minister Pat

Atkinson said. "A total of 104 full-time jobs will be created with this

project."



The second surfacing contract has been awarded to Carmacks Enterprises Ltd.

for surfacing a 15.4 km section of twinned lane on Highway 1 east of Indian

Head. This surfacing project on Highway 1 east will take place on the new

eastbound lane east of the junction of Highways 1 and 56 and continues east

for 15.4 km.



"Work for this $5.3 million surfacing project started last week and should

be completed by mid-September 2001," Atkinson said. "A total of 100 full-

time jobs will be created with this project."



Saskatchewan Highways and Transportation's budget this year is a record

$311.7 million. Over 70 km of four lane highways will be opened on

Highways 1 and 16, valued at over $25 million.



"The province is committed to twinning our portion of the national highway

system to increase safety and comfort for the driving public," Atkinson

said. "With the completion of these latest twinning projects this fall,

drivers will be able to enjoy a long stretch of new twinned highway."
