The province says a plan to remove barriers for people with disabilities isan ambitious and comprehensive strategy, suggesting a number of possible
actions for government.
The Saskatchewan Council on Disability Issues formally presented its
Disability Action Plan to Premier Lorne Calvert and Minister Responsible
for Disability Issues Harry Van Mulligen today. The Action Plan is a
framework for removing barriers faced by people with disabilities, leading
to their full inclusion in mainstream society.
"The Government of Saskatchewan wholeheartedly supports the council's
vision of full citizenship for people with disabilities," Calvert said.
"People with disabilities have the same rights and responsibilities as do
those considered mainstream. We will thoroughly review the council's
recommendations and work with our partners in the community to develop
concrete solutions."
The council, appointed by the government in March, 1999, is a fifteen-
member body comprised of people with disabilities, parents, care givers and
volunteers. The council's mandate is to provide advice and input to
government on disability issues with the goal of enhancing the quality of
life of people with disabilities.
"I thank the council for the tremendous amount of work they have done in
developing the Disability Action Plan and ensuring its recommendations are
reflective of the priorities and concerns of the larger disability
community," Van Mulligen said. "We will continue to consult and work with
the council as we move forward on addressing disability issues."
Van Mulligen noted the 2001/02 provincial budget is evidence of the
government's commitment to disability issues. This year's budget includes
several initiatives that positively impact people with disabilities
including, increases to the disability and care giver tax credits, 108 new
Early Childhood Intervention Program Spaces, increased funding for
community-based organizations and increased supports to school divisions
and students with special needs.
