MINISTER TOURS PROJECT ON HIGHWAY 39

Released on June 27, 2001

Highways and Transportation Minister Pat Atkinson was on site today to tour

the current highway improvement progress on Highway 39.

Resurfacing improvements are underway on a 14.4 km section of this busy

highway between Milestone and Lang at a cost of $3 million.

"We are working hard to revitalize Highway 39 near Milestone, as part of

our effort to improve our entire highway system," Atkinson said.

This 14.4 km resurfacing project will take place on two separate sections.

The first section is 11.1 km and will begin eight kilometres west of Yellow

Grass on Highway 39 and will continue to the Village of Lang. A further

3.3 km section will begin just east of Milestone and will continue west.

"These resurfacing improvements are expected to be completed by late July,"

Atkinson said. "Highway 39 has experienced an increase in traffic and

needs to be maintained for safety reasons."

Highways and Transportation's budget this year is a record $311.7 million,

which will help to improve the major highway system that carries 65 per

cent of provincial traffic.
