UPGRADING TWELVE SCHOOLS IN SASKATOON

The provincial government is investing more than $1.7 million on

improvements to twelve schools in Saskatoon. Education Minister Jim

Melenchuk announced the investment today at St. James School in Saskatoon.



"Our government is investing in improved learning environments for

Saskatchewan students," Melenchuk said. "We are committed to working with

school divisions to ensure students have safe, comfortable and well-

equipped learning facilities."



Staff and students assembled at St. James School were pleased to hear their

school will be receiving $225,000 from the province to upgrade the

mechanical and ventilation systems.



Other projects announced today include:



Nutana Collegiate will receive $175,000 for a roof replacement

project;



Holy Cross High School will receive $74,000 as the second phase of

a roof replacement project;



St. Angela School will receive $10,000 for a roof restoration;



St. Augustine School will receive $115,000 for roof replacement;



Aden Bowman Collegiate will receive $56,000 for a gymnasium roof

replacement project;



Caswell Community School will receive $51,000 for roof replacement;



Mayfair School will receive $14,000 for roof replacement;



St. Philip School will receive $256,000 to construct four

relocatable classrooms to meet the needs of a growing enrollment at

the school; and



Father Robinson School will receive $128,000 to construct two

relocatable classrooms.



Lakeridge School will receive $200,000 towards the school renovations

announced on April 30, 2001. The elementary school will receive a total of

$400,000 over the next two years to expand to accommodate increasing

enrollments.



Montgomery School will receive $400,000 towards a school reconstruction

project announced on June 7, 2000. The elementary school will receive a

total of $1.1 million over the next 3 years to upgrade the school facility.



With the $29.2 million in the Department of Education capital budget,

including $5 million from the Centenary Fund, approximately 150 school

construction, renovation or upgrading projects will be funded in

communities around the province this year. Additional projects will be

approved and allocated to school divisions throughout the fiscal year.



"By investing in education we are investing in the future of Saskatchewan,"

Melenchuk said.
