UPGRADING FIVE MOOSE JAW SCHOOLS

Released on June 21, 2001

The provincial government is investing $582,600 on improvements to five

schools in Moose Jaw. Post-Secondary Education and Skills Training

Minister Glenn Hagel, on behalf of Education Minister Jim Melenchuk, made

the announcement today at Riverview Collegiate.

"Our government is investing in improved learning environments for

Saskatchewan students," Hagel said. "We are committed to working with

school divisions to ensure students have safe, comfortable and well-

equipped learning facilities."

Riverview Collegiate Institute will receive $238,000 for structural

repairs. Albert E. Peacock Collegiate will receive $57,000 for a roof

replacement project. With this additional funding, the school will have

received a total of $329,849 for this project over the past 4 years.

Westmount Elementary School will receive $133,800 and Sacred Heart School

will receive $55,800 for roof replacement. St. Michael Elementary School

will receive $98,000 for replacing the heating system and improving

ventilation.

With the $29.2 million in the Department of Education capital budget,

including $5 million from the Centenary Fund, approximately 125-135 school

construction, renovation or upgrading projects will be funded this year.

"I am pleased to see this necessary maintenance being done at Moose Jaw

schools, resulting in cost savings for the future. By investing in

education we are investing in the future of Saskatchewan," Hagel said.

In the first release of project approvals, the department has approved 58

projects. The remainder of the projects will be approved and allocated to

school divisions throughout the fiscal year.
