MINISTER TOURS TWINNING ON HIGHWAY 16

Released on June 18, 2001

Highways and Transportation Minister Pat Atkinson was on site today to tour

the current twinning progress on Highway 16.

Further twinning is underway on a 16.2 km section on the TransCanada

Yellowhead highway between Maidstone and Lashburn at a cost of $10 million.

"We are on track for opening this new twinned section at the end of

August," Atkinson said. "The grading contractor is nearing completion and

surfacing is well underway. Twinning this section on Highway 16 will

increase driver comfort and safety for travellers."

This 16.2 km surfacing project will take place primarily on the new

eastbound lanes of Highway 16 between Maidstone and Lashburn, with 2.5 km

of surfacing occurring on the westbound lanes near Lashburn.

Saskatchewan Highways and Transportation's budget this year is a record

$311.7 million. More than 70 km of four lane highways will be opened on

Highways 1 and 16, valued at over $25 million.
