The province's expanding forestry industry will benefit from 300 newlytrained people this year under the Forestry Sector Memorandum of
Understanding, to be signed this evening in La Ronge.
"The forestry sector provides tremendous training and job opportunities
right here in Saskatchewan, particularly for people in communities where
the resource is found," Post-Secondary Education and Skills Training
Minister Glenn Hagel said. "This agreement is built on the success of the
Multi-Party Training Plan in the mineral sector, a model for successful
partnerships between communities, business and the education and training
sector."
The agreement is supported by numerous stakeholders, including First
Nations, Métis Nation of Saskatchewan, forest businesses, post-secondary
institutions and the provincial government.
"Industry is pleased to be part of this agreement," Forestry Training Sub-
Committee Chair Peter Kalyn said. "It is critical to have
education/training linked directly to employment as is the intent of this
agreement. As well, First Nations and Métis people have access to
opportunities in the Saskatchewan workforce."
This year, the Forestry Training Sub-Committee, which determines what
training is required, got a 15 per cent increase in its budget to
$859,000. The committee will use this to lever an anticipated $2 million
more in financial and in-kind contributions, such as equipment and staff
time, from others involved in the forestry sector. This provides nearly $3
million in training for jobs for about 300 local residents in the forestry
sector. The type of training is determined by the Forestry Training Sub-
Committee. More than 250 of the 300 training positions are expected to go
to First Nations and Métis people.
"This supports Saskatchewan's natural, competitive advantage - its growing,
young Aboriginal population," Hagel said.
