POLLING SHOWS PEOPLE HAPPY WITH ECONOMY/POLICING

Released on July 26, 2001

New polling shows 77 per cent of those surveyed think Saskatchewan is a

great place to live, work and do business and 53 per cent approve of the

way the government is handling the economy.

Sixty-seven per cent approve of the direction the government took in this

spring's budget. Eighty per cent agree with the increase in the education

budget to $1.1 billion, agree with a $312 million budget for highways and

agree with an extra $229 million for health care.

On policing, 66 per cent of Saskatchewan people polled approve of the way

the province is handling policing.

Nearly 90 per cent of those respondents agree with the direction of more

funding for the expansion of serious crime units and a program for serious

offenders. The majority of those polled would like to see stiffer

penalties for crimes and a tougher Young offenders Act.

Finally, 49 per cent of those polled approve of the overall job the

provincial government is doing. That includes more than a 20 per cent

increase in males over 55 since January. Other significant polling

increases in the way people view the job the government is doing happened

in health care (up 14 per cent) and highways (up 13 per cent) also since

January.

Polling in this quarter was conducted in April, May and June. Standalone

polls were also commissioned by the Department of Finance and SaskPower.

Doug Fast and Associates conducted the omnibus polls, Sigma Analytics the

finance poll and Pulse Research the SaskPower poll.

The total cost of all the polling was $78,725.
