FIXING WASCANA PARKWAY BRIDGE

Released on July 25, 2001

Improvements are now underway at the Wascana Parkway concrete bridge pier

over Highway No. 1 in Regina.

"Work began on this $150,000 project July 23rd and should be completed by

August 24th," Highways and Transportation Minister Pat Atkinson said.

"Completion of this job will require an estimated 10 workers."

Traffic on Highway No. 1 will not be affected for the duration of the

repairs. Toward the end of the project, from August 13th to August 24th,

traffic on Wascana Parkway may possibly be restricted to one lane in each

direction.

The rehabilitation work on the Wascana Parkway concrete bridge pier will

maintain the structural integrity of the bridge and extend its service

life. Work will essentially focus on the removal and replacement of the

bridge's deteriorating concrete.

Vector Construction Ltd. of Saskatoon was awarded this improvement project.

Saskatchewan Highways and Transportation's budget this year is a record

$311.7 million, which will help to improve the major highway system that

carries 65 per cent of provincial traffic.
