PARK IMPROVEMENTS AT GREENWATER LAKE

Released on July 19, 2001

Greenwater Lake Provincial Park is celebrating two official grand openings

of new park facilities.

"I am extremely pleased to see the development of improved recreational

services and learning opportunities at Greenwater Lake Park," Labour

Minister Kim Trew said, on behalf of Environment and Resource Management

Minister Buckley Belanger. "The combined public and private investments of

almost $3 million at this park are sure to help continue to attract more

visitors."

The first event was held to open new park facilities that cost more than $1

million, including a visitor/administration centre, a bath/change house and

a pedestrian/bicycle trail. Construction of the $148,000 bath/change house

started in 1999 and was financed by the province's Centenary Fund.

Construction on the visitor centre and trail began in 1998 and the combined

cost of $795,000 was paid for under the parks' budget.

The second grand opening was for the privately operated, 18-hole Greenhills

Golf and Country Club. This golf club, a major attraction for park

visitors, has seen a total upgrade investment of about $1.8 million for a

new golf course, driving range and additional parking.

Saskatchewan's provincial parks attract more than 2.4 million visitors each

year. Greenwater Lake Provincial Park is the seventh most visited park in

Saskatchewan, attracting 130,000 visitors each summer. An estimated $125

million of economic activity is generated from park visitation, of which

about $32 million occurs in rural Saskatchewan in close proximity to parks.
