HUMBOLDT RECEIVES FUNDS FROM INFRASTRUCTURE PROGRAM

Released on July 13, 2001

The Governments of Canada and Saskatchewan will provide more than $92,000

to assist with the expansion and upgrade of the sewage lagoon in the City

of Humboldt.

Natural Resources Canada Minister Ralph Goodale, on behalf of Veterans

Affairs Minister, Secretary of State (Western Economic Diversification)

(Francophonie) Ron J. Duhamel, and Municipal Affairs and Housing Minister

Ron Osika today announced funding support through the Canada-Saskatchewan

Infrastructure Program.

Improvements to the sewage lagoon will increase holding pond capacity and

improve the efficiency of the current system. The addition of a new

holding cell, upgrades to the nutrient removal system and the retrofitting

of aeration equipment will accommodate anticipated municipal and industrial

growth.

"The Government of Canada is pleased to invest in projects that contribute

to the overall well-being of Saskatchewan communities," Goodale said.

"Funding expansion and upgrading of waste-water treatment facilities, like

in the City of Humboldt, help protect our environment and enhance the

quality of life for all Saskatchewan residents."

The Canada-Saskatchewan Infrastructure Program is a five-year program that

will result in infrastructure investments of at least $170 million in

Saskatchewan municipalities. The program provides up to two-thirds of the

eligible costs associated with community projects. Communities provide the

balance of project costs.

"The Canada-Saskatchewan Infrastructure Program is a good example of how

all levels of government can work together for the benefit of Saskatchewan

communities," Osika said. "This program focuses on the long-term benefits

of building a 21st century infrastructure, supporting long term economic

growth and enhancing the quality of our environment."

Other priorities under the program include local transportation

infrastructure, cultural and recreational facilities, infrastructure

supporting tourism, rural and remote telecommunications, high-speed

Internet access for local public institutions and affordable housing.

"We are pleased the provincial and federal governments have chosen to

assist the City of Humboldt with its lagoon expansion project through the

Canada - Saskatchewan Infrastructure Program," Humboldt Mayor Dennis Korte

said. "This project, though urgently needed, is very costly and the

financial assistance provided by the grant program is appreciated."

This year $24 million combined federal and provincial funding has been

allocated to 83 Saskatchewan municipalities.
