RESURFACING HIGHWAY 5 NEAR CANORA

Released on July 3, 2001

An 11.7 km section is about to be resurfaced on Highway 5 from Mikado to

Canora.

"Road work will begin on this $1 million project this week and should be

completed by mid-July," Highways and Transportation Minister Pat Atkinson

said. "Completion of this job will require an estimated 24 full-time

workers."

Potzus Paving & Road Maintenance Ltd. of Yorkton was awarded this project.

This project is an extension of the 13.1 km resurfacing improvements from

Veregin to Mikado on Highway 5 completed last summer. The 11.7 km section

will begin just outside the town of Canora and will continue to the village

of Mikado.

"Highway 5 has been experiencing higher volumes of heavy traffic recently

and it's a priority to keep this highway in good driving condition,"

Atkinson said. "Once this highway work is finished, motorists will enjoy a

lengthy stretch of improved highway."

Highways and Transportation's budget this year is a record $311.7 million,

which will help to improve the major highway system that carries 65 per

cent of provincial traffic.
