REPAVING HIGHWAY 1 WEST OF REGINA

Released on July 3, 2001

A total of 20.9 km will soon be repaved on the westbound lanes of Highway 1

near Belle Plaine and nearby off-ramps to create a smoother driving surface

for travellers.

"This $3.1 million project is currently in progress and will be completed

at the end of July," Highways and Transportation Minister Pat Atkinson

said. "This highway improvement is expected to create 26 full-time jobs."

Ramco Paving Ltd. of Regina was awarded this project. 19.9 km of

improvements will take place in the westbound lanes of Highway 1 beginning

west of the junction of Highway 1 and Grid 642 at Belle Plaine.

Improvements will also take place on two off-ramps on Highway 1 west near

Highway 301.

"As part of our national highway system, Highway 1 is expected to carry a

high volume of traffic, including heavy trucks," Atkinson said. "It is a

priority to invest our budget dollars in the preservation and maintenance

of our provincial highways."

Highways and Transportation's budget this year is a record $311.7 million,

which will help to improve the major highway system that carries 65 per

cent of provincial traffic.
