MACKINNON RESIGNS

Released on February 28, 2001

Premier Lorne Calvert today accepted the resignation of long-time Cabinet

Minister Janice MacKinnon.

"It is with regret that I accept Ms. MacKinnon's resignation from Cabinet,"

Calvert said. "She has been a colleague for a decade and her experience and

dedication will be missed."

MacKinnon was first elected in Saskatoon Westmount in 1991. Over the past ten

years, she has served as Social Services Minister, Canada's first female

Finance Minister, Economic and Co-operative Development Minister and Crown

Investments Corporation Minister.

"Ms. MacKinnon's achievements as minister have been significant. She played a

critical role in our government fighting to balance the budget and establish a

responsible, fiscal regime in the province. Her work as finance minister

helped lay the foundation for the future of Saskatchewan.

"She created a forestry development strategy which will be an important

component of our future economic prosperity. Ms. MacKinnon also played a key

role in bringing the Synchrotron project to Saskatoon. Her initiatives will

continue to pay dividends to Saskatchewan people for many years to come."

Calvert thanked MacKinnon on behalf of the people of Saskatchewan for her

decade of service.

MacKinnon's resignation from Cabinet is effective March 2, 2001. She will

remain as MLA for Saskatoon Idylwyld through the spring sitting of the

legislature.
