\"LISTENING TOUR\" VIEWS HIGHWAY TWINNING

Released on August 17, 2001

Premier Lorne Calvert's Dialogue with Saskatchewan tour visited the

twinning progress on Highway 1 east today.

Premier Calvert was joined by several other cabinet members, including

Highways and Transportation Minister Pat Atkinson, to tour the $11.4

million of surfacing work that has begun on 33 km of future twinned lanes.

The project begins approximately 10 km east of Indian Head and continues to

just east of Wolseley.

"This will be a major achievement for our government as we are improving

safety for travellers on Highway 1 east," Calvert said. "Our government

committed to twinning our portion of the National Highway System and it's

exciting to see so much highway construction out here today as these

commitments become a reality."

The work is divided into two separate surfacing contracts. The first

contract is 18 km of surfacing near Wolseley. This $6.1 million surfacing

project on Highway 1 east will take place on the new twinned lane that

begins west of Wolseley and will continue east of town.

The second surfacing contract is a 15.4 km section of twinned lane on

Highway 1 east of Indian Head. This $5.3 million surfacing project will

take place on the new eastbound lane east of the junction of Highways 1 and

56 and continues east for 15.4 km.

A third contract is also currently underway on Highway 1 east. Work is in

progress on a 12.5 km grading contract from west of Wolseley to east of

town. This $2.4 million project will be completed next month and surfacing

will follow immediately after.

"Highway 1 east has experienced a lot of construction in the past couple of

years to create these 33.4 km of new twinned lanes," Premier Calvert said.

"I'm sure the travelling public will appreciate this long stretch of newly

twinned highway.

"I look forward to seeing future twinning progress on this road."

Saskatchewan Highways and Transportation's budget this year is a record

$311.7 million. Over 70 km of four lane highways will be opened on

Highways 1 and 16, valued at over $25 million.
