MORE HIGHWAY 1 WEST TWINNING

Released on August 9, 2001

Crews have begun surfacing 12.1 km of newly twinned road on Highway 1, just

east of the Alberta border.

"Work for this $3.8 million surfacing project began in early May and should

be completed by mid-September," Highways and Transportation Minister Pat

Atkinson said. "This project will create around 83 full-time jobs."

The surfacing project on Highway 1 west is taking place on the new

westbound lanes from 10.1 km east of the Alberta border, continuing east.

Surfacing will also take place on the east bound lanes from 1.45 km east of

the Alberta border, continuing west.

"Twinning our national highway system will increase safety for the driving

public on these busy routes," Atkinson said. "This twinning project, along

with the previous 9 km of twinning already completed on Highway 1,

beginning just inside the Alberta border and continuing east, will bring a

total of 21 km of new four lane highway at the Alberta border. This

section of road will be opened to traffic in the fall."

Anderson Rental and Paving Ltd. was awarded this project.

Saskatchewan Highways and Transportation's budget this year is a record

$311.7 million. Over 70 km of four lane highways will be opened on

Highways 1 and 16, valued at over $25 million.
