UPGRADING HIGHWAY 55 NEAR RAPID VIEW

Released on August 8, 2001

Grading and surfacing work is underway on a 10.7 km section of Highway 55

west of Rapid View.

"Work for this $2.4 million grading and surfacing project will be completed

by early October," Highways and Transportation Minister Pat Atkinson said.

"This project will create 44 full-time jobs."

The project will begin 10 km west of Rapid View and will continue to 5 km

south of the Beaver River, for a total distance of 10.7 km. The subgrade

on this section will be reconstructed and a granular surfacing structure

with a double seal coat surface will be applied.

This section of Highway 55 is being upgraded under the department's

Enhanced Forestry Initiative. The existing highway is a low standard,

narrow roadway with only a thin membrane surface (TMS).

"This road needs to be upgraded in order to handle the increasing heavy

truck haul on this route," Atkinson said. "There is a high volume of logs

hauled over this section of highway. By improving this section of Highway

55, it will be able to accommodate the heavy traffic increase."

Potzus Paving & Road Maintenance Ltd. of Yorkton was awarded the project.

Saskatchewan Highways and Transportation's budget this year is a record

$311.7 million, which will help to resurface and upgrade 550 km of rural

and northern highways.

Motorists are asked to drive safely through the Orange Zone and watch for

construction signs and equipment.
