IMPROVING HIGHWAY 955 NEAR LA LOCHE

Released on August 8, 2001

Surfacing improvements are now underway on a 4.6 km section of Highway 955

near La Loche.

"Work on this $680,000 improvement project began in July and should be

completed by mid-September," Highways and Transportation Minister Pat

Atkinson said. "This project should create around 31 full-time jobs."

Work is taking place on Highway 955 from its junction with Highway 155 at

the northern village of La Loche, northeast to its junction with the

Clearwater River Dene Nation Access, for a total of 4.6 km. The project

will see the construction of a road with a double seal coat.

"This road needs to be upgraded to provide a wider, dust-free surface for

local traffic travelling between La Loche and the Clearwater Dene Nation

community," Atkinson said. "The dust free surface will increase the level

of safety and service for the travelling public, especially during times

when the existing gravel surface becomes muddy and rutted."

Kirsch Construction Co. Ltd was awarded the project.

Saskatchewan Highways and Transportation's budget this year is a record

$311.7 million, which will help to resurface and upgrade 550 km of rural

and northern highways.

Motorists are asked to drive safely through the Orange Zone and watch for

construction signs and equipment.
