IMPROVING HIGHWAY 6 NEAR MINTON

Released on August 8, 2001

Major road improvements will soon begin on a 9.1 km section of Highway 6

north of Minton.

"Work for this $1.6 million improvement project is anticipated to begin

this week and should be completed by late October," Highways and

Transportation Minister Pat Atkinson said. "This project will create

around 33 full-time jobs."

Highway 6 north of Minton will receive a new subgrade to strengthen and

improve the highway in preparation for surfacing. The project begins 2 km

north of Minton and continues north.

"Highway 6 is a major north/south provincial corridor that has experienced

higher volumes of heavy traffic in the past few years," Atkinson said. "By

rebuilding this highway section, we are ensuring Highway 6 will support

these heavier loads and higher traffic volumes."

Kay's Construction Inc. was awarded this improvement project.

Saskatchewan Highways and Transportation's budget this year is a record

$311.7 million, which will help to improve the major highway system that

carries 65 per cent of provincial traffic.
