IMPROVING HIGHWAY 31 NEAR LUSELAND

Released on August 8, 2001

Surfacing work has begun on 9.9 km of Highway 31 west near Luseland.

"Work for this $2.2 million surfacing project should be completed by late

August," Highways and Transportation Minister Pat Atkinson said. "This

project will create around 45 full-time jobs."

The 9.9 km surfacing project on Highway 31 will begin 25 km northwest of

its junction with Highway 21 and continues northwest. A double seal coat

will be applied to the road to make it stronger.

"Like many highways in Saskatchewan, Highway 31 has experienced an increase

in heavy truck traffic, making it necessary to repair current damage and

strengthen this highway for future truck hauls," Atkinson said. "We are

fixing two sections on Highway 31 this summer.

A 10.9 km resurfacing project will also be underway northwest of Kerrobert

later this summer."

W. F. Botkin Construction Ltd. of Regina was awarded this surfacing project.

Saskatchewan Highways and Transportation's budget this year is a record

$311.7 million, which will help to resurface and upgrade 550 km of rural

and northern highways.

Motorists are asked to drive safely through the Orange Zone and watch for

construction signs and equipment.
